What's Ahead?

AI's Environmental Toll Is Uneven and Urgent

Overview: Artificial intelligence is growing fast, but this rapid expansion is raising serious environmental concerns about how much energy and resources it uses.

The Details

  • Training advanced AI models takes up a huge amount of electricity and water. For instance, one large AI model can use as much energy as hundreds of households over a year and can waste a lot of fresh water.

  • By 2026, AI's energy needs might be greater than those of some small countries, putting extra strain on local power grids and water supplies. Although we're making strides to make AI more efficient, the benefits aren’t shared equally.

  • Areas with less access to clean energy and water suffer more. For example, data centers in dry places like Arizona face severe water shortages because of their cooling needs.

So What: We must tackle these environmental inequalities. Fairly sharing the environmental costs will help balance the impact and make sure AI benefits everyone, not just those with abundant resources.

Jared Leto Funds Controversial $500M AI Startup

Overview: Jared Leto has joined the wave of celebrities investing in AI, backing the startup Captions, which raised $60 million.

The Details

  • Oscar-winning actor and Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto is among the investors in Captions, a generative AI startup boosting its valuation to $500 million. Captions offers tools for AI-driven video editing, eye contact correction, and translation.

  • This investment follows Leto's previous backing of Pika, another AI company focused on generating videos from text and images. Other celebrities, like Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert Downey Jr., are also investing in AI, with a focus on environmental solutions.

  • However, figures like Ashton Kutcher face criticism for their AI support amid concerns about job displacement. Additionally, over 200 musicians have advocated for AI regulation to safeguard artists' rights. Some stars, like Justine Bateman, call for shutting down controversial AI technology, arguing it threatens human creativity.

So What: As AI continues to influence entertainment and beyond, it's essential to ensure a balance between technological advancement and protection for human creators.

AI Detects Cancer Better Than Doctors, Says UCLA

Overview: Unfold AI, created by Avenda Health, is revolutionizing prostate cancer detection and treatment, showing better accuracy than traditional methods.

The Details

  • A UCLA study showed that Unfold AI detected prostate cancer with 84% accuracy, compared to doctors’ 67%. This AI tool creates a 3D map of cancer risk by analyzing clinical data, helping doctors choose the best treatment options.

  • Joshua Trachenberg, a UCLA professor and prostate cancer patient, experienced the benefits firsthand. Instead of removing his entire prostate gland, Unfold AI guided a focused ultrasound therapy that targeted only the cancerous tissue. Now cancer-free, Trachenberg avoided the severe side effects of traditional surgery, like incontinence and impotence.

  • Experts like Dr. Harvey Castro caution that while AI is a powerful tool, it should enhance, not replace, doctors’ expertise. He also emphasizes the importance of protecting patient data and making AI technology accessible to everyone.

So What: Unfold AI is a game-changer in prostate cancer care, offering more accurate diagnoses and personalized treatments.
