AI vs. Lawyer Who Wins in Court

At SXSW Sydney an AI tool faced a lawyer in a mock traffic case. The AI made errors citing the wrong laws and state. While AI processes vast legal data it struggles with accuracy and context. The verdict AI is a research tool but cannot replace lawyers yet.

Can AI Predict The Next Pandemic?

AI is transforming infectious disease prediction, but its success depends on data transparency and lower training costs.

The Details

AI helps track disease spread, predict outbreaks, and improve diagnosis, but its use in epidemiology has been limited due to data challenges. New models require less data yet deliver more accurate predictions, accelerating analysis from weeks to hours. AI-powered graph neural networks have already predicted COVID-19 and flu cases with high accuracy.

These models also analyze viral genomes to assess transmission risks and immune evasion. AI enhances public health decisions by refining surveillance data, reducing biases, and personalizing insights for policymakers. However, its effectiveness relies on ethical data-sharing practices and affordable training costs. More accessible, transparent data will unlock AI’s full potential in public health, improving outbreak response and disease prevention worldwide.

Meetings are full of important moments, but keeping track of everything is nearly impossible.

Notes get messy, key points get lost, and follow-ups slip through the cracks.

Fathom AI makes sure nothing is missed by automatically capturing and organizing what matters.

TECHNOLOGY

Anthropic’s New AI Thinks Before It Speaks

Anthropic just launched Claude 3.7 Sonnet, an AI model that combines different thinking styles to solve problems more effectively.

The Details

Unlike traditional AI, this model uses a hybrid reasoning system, meaning it can switch between fast answers and deep thinking depending on the task. In “extended thinking mode,” it pauses to reflect before responding, improving its accuracy in coding, math, and physics. This feature is only available to paid users.

Anthropic also introduced Claude Code, an AI tool that helps developers handle complex coding tasks. Despite its advanced capabilities, Claude 3.7 Sonnet is cheaper than OpenAI’s o1 model, costing $3 per million input tokens compared to OpenAI’s $15. Backed by Amazon and Google, Anthropic is positioning itself as a serious competitor in the AI race, offering smarter and more cost-effective tools for businesses.

ROBOTICS

AI Robots Can Now Learn and Work Together

Figure’s humanoid robots just showed they can recognize new objects, follow voice commands, and collaborate without preprogrammed instructions.

The Details

In a demo, two robots identified and sorted groceries they had never seen before, placing items in the fridge, drawers, and counters based on reasoning, not pre-set rules. This is powered by Helix AI, which combines vision, language, and movement to enable real-time decision-making.

Unlike traditional robots that require strict programming, Figure’s AI allows for flexible, human-like problem-solving in unpredictable environments. This positions Figure against Tesla, Meta, and Google-backed Apptronik in the race to build robots for homes and businesses. While slower than humans, this breakthrough pushes AI robots closer to practical household use.

Humans and AI

👇 Look: AI cuts knee surgery time in half

Developed by Alexandra Hospital, the AI computes implant positioning in 0.1 seconds, cutting surgery time from 73 to 38 minutes. A study of 67 patients found 92 percent accuracy with AI, compared to 52 percent without it. Patients report faster recovery and better results. The team has filed patents and is in talks to commercialize the technology, with 200 surgeries already completed.
